A recent consumer alert was released by the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Financial Institutions concerning the use of cryptocurrency ATM kiosks operated by Bitcoin Depot Inc. The issuance of this alert was prompted by Bitcoin Depot’s recent filing for bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, which led to the closure of its ATM network. This closure could potentially impact consumers who have outstanding funds with the company.

Bitcoin Depot, a company with operations in 33 states, including Ohio, is known for its Bitcoin ATM kiosks. These physical kiosks enable individuals to buy or sometimes sell cryptocurrencies using cash or debit cards. However, unlike traditional ATMs, these kiosks do not connect to a bank account. Instead, they facilitate the transfer of cryptocurrency to a digital wallet or a provided address.

According to the Division, Bitcoin Depot conducted a substantial number of transactions in Ohio, totaling 10,637 individual transactions across at least 50 machines within the past year. As a result of the bankruptcy filing, 32 consumers are currently owed $90,907 in refunds, with individual refund amounts ranging from $18 to $43,000. While these affected individuals will be contacted directly, the Division is urging any Ohioan who has utilized Bitcoin Depot’s services to be aware of the situation and the potential for a refund.

To file a claim or inquire about a refund, consumers can do so through the bankruptcy case. Additional means of communication include reaching out to Bitcoin Depot’s restructuring hotline at 844-339-4117 (Toll-Free U.S./Canada) or +1-332-232-7827 (International) or emailing [email protected]. Before initiating a claim, it is recommended that consumers gather all relevant receipts, transaction records, and supporting documents to support their case.

For those seeking further clarification or assistance, the Division’s Office of Consumer Affairs can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone at 614-728-8400. By staying informed and taking necessary steps to address any potential issues with Bitcoin Depot, Ohio consumers can protect their financial interests and seek resolution for any outstanding claims or refunds.
