Coweta County Sheriff’s deputies recently prevented a vulnerable elderly man from falling victim to a Bitcoin scam that could have resulted in a total loss of $27,000. The con artist had posed as a federal law enforcement officer, claiming to have an arrest warrant for the man and demanding an immediate payment in Bitcoin to resolve the supposed legal issue.

The situation came to light when the man’s concerned relatives reached out to law enforcement after he left his residence to withdraw funds. Recognizing the signs of a potential scam, the family contacted the authorities to intervene before the man could fall further into the clutches of the fraudulent scheme. By the time law enforcement located him, the man had already transferred a significant sum of money to the scammers and was on the verge of sending even more. Fortunately, a vigilant deputy, Bobby Crowdis, managed to intercept the situation just in time.

Deputy Crowdis described the moment he stepped in to prevent the man from losing an additional $27,000, “At the time, I realized he was still on the phone with the scammers. I advised him to put the phone in his truck and step onto the side with me so we could go over what’s going on.” Thanks to the deputy’s timely intervention, the man was spared from a more severe financial loss. “Two deposits prior to our intervention, totaling close to $17,000. And then when Deputy Crowdis intervened in the situation, it saved him from depositing $27,000,” shared Crowdis.

Reflecting on the incident, Deputy Crowdis expressed satisfaction in preventing a vulnerable individual from falling victim to a scam of this nature. Despite his efforts, Crowdis acknowledged the challenges posed by scammers who can be remarkably convincing in deceiving their targets. “I wish he wouldn’t have gone through this ordeal. And I wish more people would pay attention and—apparently, they’re so convincing that they get a lot of people to fall for the scam,” he remarked.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable populations from falling prey to scams. Concerned citizens were encouraged to remain attentive to the behavior of elderly family members and neighbors, particularly if there are indications that they may be at risk of being duped. Underscoring the need for swift action, law enforcement authorities urged individuals to report any suspicions of fraudulent activity promptly.

In response to the incident, the sheriff’s office reiterated the importance of involving law enforcement in situations where fraudulent activity is suspected. By promptly alerting the authorities and allowing them to handle such situations, individuals can prevent further financial harm and protect vulnerable community members from falling victim to scams. Deputy Bobby Crowdis’s swift action exemplified the critical role law enforcement plays in safeguarding individuals from financial exploitation and fraudulent schemes.
