Investors Withdraw $726 Million from Crypto Funds as Bitcoin ETF Enthusiasm Wanes

September 9, 2024

Bitcoin appears to be losing favor with mainstream investors and institutions, as data on the flow of money in and out of new Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) suggests a decline in interest.

According to CoinShares data, U.S. investors withdrew $725.7 million from crypto investment funds last week, marking the highest weekly outflow since March. Interestingly, European investors actually increased their investments in crypto funds during the same period.

The majority of the outflow was from Bitcoin ETFs, with $643 million exiting such products, while Ethereum funds saw a loss of $98 million. Notably, a significant portion of the outflow from Ethereum funds came from the Grayscale Ethereum Trust, which transitioned from a closed-end fund to a spot ETF after receiving approval for trading in July.

Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. have experienced eight consecutive days of losses, with nearly $1.2 billion redeemed during this period, as per Farside data. These ETFs were approved by the SEC in January after a decade of attempts.

The price of Bitcoin has dropped considerably from its all-time high of $73,737 in March, currently trading at $56,450, reflecting a 3% decline over the past week.

CoinShares noted in a report that the shift away from crypto ETFs is linked to U.S. economic data and concerns about potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. The report highlighted that outflows slowed later in the week.

Following weaker-than-expected U.S. economic data, global markets, including the crypto market, were impacted. The S&P 500 also experienced its worst week since March 2023.

Investors are anticipating a potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve, which could impact the appeal of “risk-on” assets like Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that are prone to volatility.

Despite the negative sentiment in the U.S., there is some optimism in European markets, with investment funds seeing inflows in assets like Solana. Last week, Solana investment vehicles received $6.2 million, with the fifth-largest coin by market cap currently priced at $133, showing a nearly 1% increase over the past week.

Overall, the shifting dynamics in the crypto investment landscape reflect a complex interplay of economic factors and investor sentiment, with different regions experiencing varying levels of interest and activity in the crypto space.
