County Approves Pause on Proposed Bitcoin Mining Data Center

Morgan County commissioners recently made the decision to impose a one-year moratorium on a proposed bitcoin mining data center in Somerville, following mounting opposition from local residents living near the proposed site on Union Road. The company behind the proposal, VoltCore, faced resistance as more than 450 individuals signed petitions in the past weeks, expressing concerns about noise pollution, environmental impacts, and the overall effect of the project on the community.
Ray Long, the County Commission Chairman, emphasized that the residents’ worries significantly influenced the outcome of the decision. He explained, “Today we passed this resolution putting a pause button so we can go back and study and get more details about how does it really affects the environment, the noise and you heard a lot of the concerns in here today. Those are not made up, those are true.” Long further noted that the moratorium would allow for a thorough examination of the project to grasp its potential repercussions comprehensively.
The residents who attended the meeting where the decision was made expressed satisfaction with the outcome. One of the Somerville residents, Lyndsey Hutson, voiced her approval, stating, “I think it was a great step to help us. I know that this is a newer phenomenon across the country.” Hutson highlighted the serene nature of her property and the personal significance of the issue for her, mentioning the recent loss of her son to brain cancer. She emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in the area for personal reasons, stating, “Our property right now is very peaceful. I lost my son six months ago to brain cancer, so this is a very close thing to my heart. I need my peace, and we’re all out there for a reason.”
The decision to instate a moratorium on the bitcoin mining data center project reflects the county’s commitment to thoroughly assess the potential impacts of such developments on the local community and environment.
