At a recent rally, PAP’s Mountbatten candidate, Ms. Gho Sze Kee, expressed her concerns about the election challenger, independent candidate Jeremy Tan’s policies, particularly his push for the government to invest in the digital currency Bitcoin. Describing Bitcoin as a highly volatile product that lacks physical backing and is not supported by any government entity, Ms. Gho cautioned voters against what she deemed impractical proposals from her opponent.

During the rally at the Home of Athletics sports track in Stadium Boulevard, Ms. Gho, a maritime lawyer with a long history of PAP activism, emphasized that the PAP does not support gambling, labeling Mr. Tan’s Bitcoin-related ideas as such. She pointed out that Bitcoin’s value could plummet to zero with no tangible assets to support it, likening its unpredictability to gambling, a practice contrary to the PAP’s principles.

Mr. Tan, an independent candidate who made his fortune in a skincare distribution business before delving into Bitcoin investments, has proposed policies such as using Housing Board flats as retirement assets and establishing a Singapore-dollar-denominated Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for the financial security of Singaporeans. Ms. Gho was quick to question the practicality and feasibility of these suggestions, particularly in light of the government having to provide additional funding for initiatives like Bitcoin baby products, which she deemed unsustainable.

Acknowledging the curiosity of younger residents about Mr. Tan’s Bitcoin-centric propositions, Ms. Gho stressed the importance of distinguishing between mere ideas and actual implementable policies. Encouraging voters to scrutinize her opponent’s motivations and proposals, she emphasized that governance should not be based on flashy slogans or unattainable promises but on diligent work, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to serving the people.

As part of her campaigning efforts, Ms. Gho highlighted her extensive groundwork in Mountbatten, walking alongside outgoing MP Lim Biow Chuan for the past ten months to understand the needs and aspirations of the community. She delineated a comprehensive plan to enhance the constituency, including the establishment of sports clubs, career development programs, mental health support services, childcare facilities, improved connectivity, and designated areas for pet owners.

In a bid to assure residents of her dedication to their well-being, Ms. Gho positioned herself as a pragmatic and hardworking candidate, devoid of catchy slogans or empty rhetoric. She reaffirmed her commitment to serving Singaporeans for decades to come, pledging to leave the country in a better state for future generations. Paying homage to Mr. Lim’s contributions to the constituency, she acknowledged the significant responsibility of filling the shoes of an esteemed predecessor while remaining steadfast in her resolve to continue building a stronger community in Mountbatten.
