April 4, 2025
Ryan Warsofsky has been selected as the Head Coach for Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, according to an announcement by the team. This will mark Warsofsky’s debut as Head Coach for Team USA, following his previous role as Assistant Coach for the 2023 Men’s team, where he contributed to USA’s fourth-place finish. At 37, Warsofsky, the current Head Coach of the San Jose Sharks since June 13, 2024, is considered the youngest NHL head coach, taking up the position at the age of 36. It is noteworthy that this will be the second time in three years that Team USA will be led by Warsofsky, who is about to complete his third season with the Sharks.
During the current NHL season, Warsofsky achieved his first NHL victory on Oct. 28 against Utah in a remarkable comeback, securing a win after trailing 4-1 in the third period. By achieving his first victory, Warsofsky became the 100th-youngest coach in NHL history and the fourth-youngest since 2000, ranking 22nd among the youngest coaches of all time.
Throughout his tenure at the San Jose Sharks, Warsofsky has been instrumental in nurturing and guiding the young players within the organization, such as Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, Collin Graf, William Eklund, and Shakir Mukhamadullin. Notably, the Sharks currently lead the NHL in scoring by players aged 22 and below, amassing 170 such points as of April 4, which is the third-highest tally in the club’s history. The team has witnessed significant achievements this season, including the first NHL goals from eight different skaters, career-best performances from players like Henry Thrun and William Eklund, and a remarkable debut for netminder Yaroslav Askarov.
During his role as Assistant Coach from 2022 to 2024, Warsofsky was responsible for overseeing the team’s defensemen, contributing to Erik Karlsson’s second Norris Trophy win. Karlsson set a franchise record for the Sharks in the 2022-23 season with 101 points, in addition to reaching career highs in goals, assists, and points. Under Warsofsky’s guidance, Karlsson also set a franchise record with points in 14 consecutive games between Dec. 3 and Jan. 6, further highlighting Warsofsky’s coaching prowess.
Warsofsky has demonstrated success across various tiers of hockey, securing a Calder Cup Championship with the Chicago Wolves and Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League, and boasting an impressive 105-47-11-7 regular season record in the AHL. Additionally, Warsofsky served as Assistant Coach for three seasons and as Head Coach for two seasons with the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL, achieving an 88-44-10-2 record and leading the team to the Kelly Cup Final in 2017.
The 2025 IIHF World Championship is slated to commence on May 9 and is scheduled to be predominantly held in Stockholm, Sweden.
