Bitcoin blackmail scheme targeting Central Florida residents

Residents in Central Florida are being targeted by a Bitcoin blackmail scheme where scammers claim to have embarrassing videos and demand payment in Bitcoin to prevent the release of these videos. These scammers are sending emails containing personal information, such as addresses, phone numbers, and even photos of the victims’ surroundings to create a sense of authenticity and intimidation.
News 6 Meteorologist Julie Broughton was one of the recipients of these emails, receiving a message threatening to release embarrassing videos unless she paid nearly $2,000 in Bitcoin. The email was detailed and unsettling, causing Broughton to question its validity. Despite the emails containing personal information, such as photos of her neighborhood and detailed threats, experts have explained that this information can be sourced from public records and Google Earth.
Assistant Special Agent in Charge at the U.S. Secret Service Orlando Field Office, Webster Green, warned that engaging with these scammers by paying the initial amount could lead to further extortion attempts. He emphasized the importance of not responding to these emails and simply deleting them to avoid falling victim to the scam.
While the scheme initially targeted cheating husbands, there is growing concern about how younger individuals may react to these blackmail emails. Broughton expressed worry about her daughter and other young people falling for the scam out of fear of getting in trouble. Green highlighted the unfortunate instances of teenage suicides resulting from these actions and stressed the need for open communication with young individuals to address such threats.
If anyone receives such an email, they are encouraged to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. Experts advise against falling for the scheme and reiterate the importance of not engaging with the scammers. By remaining vigilant and informed, individuals can protect themselves from falling victim to these blackmail schemes.
It is crucial to educate both adults and young individuals about the prevalence of such scams and emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicious emails. By raising awareness and promoting dialogue about online threats, communities can work towards preventing individuals from being taken advantage of by cybercriminals. Vigilance, communication, and a proactive approach to cybersecurity are essential in combating these types of schemes and protecting oneself from falling victim to online extortion.
