El Salvador’s Three-Year Bitcoin Experiment: Progress Report
September 9, 2024
Three years back, on September 7, 2021, El Salvador made headlines globally with President Nayib Bukele’s surprising announcement of adopting Bitcoin as legal tender. In addition to this groundbreaking move, the country started purchasing BTC to bolster its reserves, steadily increasing its holdings over the years. As we mark three years since El Salvador’s foray into BTC, let’s delve into the outcomes of this bold investment decision.
El Salvador’s initial Bitcoin acquisition took place on September 6, 2021, just a day before the official declaration of Bitcoin’s legal tender status. The country acquired 400 BTC at an average price of $46,811, amounting to $18.724 million at that time.
Since that milestone purchase, El Salvador has significantly expanded its Bitcoin treasury through subsequent substantial acquisitions. Within a year of the first buy, the country’s BTC reserves surpassed 2,300 BTC, with the acquisition spree continuing.
At present, El Salvador boasts a total of 5,867 BTC in its possession. The Nayib Tracker website data discloses that the average cost of these Bitcoin holdings stands at $43,884. With the current BTC price exceeding $55,000, El Salvador is reaping substantial profits from its strategic investments.
The data from the website indicates that the country has accrued a profit of $34.55 million from its Bitcoin acquisitions, translating to a remarkable 25.88% gain over the past three years. Furthermore, El Salvador’s BTC reserves position it as the world’s third-largest government Bitcoin holder, trailing behind the US and UK governments.
President Nayib Bukele has affirmed that El Salvador has no intentions of divesting its BTC holdings, emphasizing a long-term perspective where 1 BTC holds the same value regardless of its dollar equivalent. Regarding Bitcoin adoption, the president clarified that residents are not compelled to embrace the cryptocurrency, as the country continues to operate with both the US dollar and Bitcoin as legal tender options.
Despite the lucrative returns on its Bitcoin investments, El Salvador remains steadfast in its commitment to the cryptocurrency cause. The country has launched its Bitcoin monitoring website, enabling users to track various BTC metrics and monitor the nation’s BTC holdings.
In conclusion, El Salvador’s pioneering journey into Bitcoin as legal tender has not only garnered significant profits but also solidified its position as a key player in the global cryptocurrency landscape. The country’s unwavering dedication to its Bitcoin mission underscores a forward-looking approach that prioritizes innovation and financial resilience.
