Bitcoin Price Drops to Lowest in 5 Months as Mt. Gox Initiates Repayments and Circle Obtains MiCA License
July 7, 2024
Bitcoin faced a challenging week as it dropped to a five-month low amidst various significant events in the cryptocurrency world. The market sentiment took a hit following a bearish June, with hopes of a July recovery based on historical trends and a positive start to the month. However, Bitcoin’s momentum was short-lived as it failed to sustain its one-week high of $63,861 on July 1, diverging from the bullish U.S. equities trend.
Glassnode highlighted Bitcoin’s indecisiveness amid bearish pressure, with the cryptocurrency experiencing three consecutive intraday declines, falling below $59,000 on July 4 as signs of miner capitulation surfaced. Despite the downward trend, Core Scientific founder Darin Feinstein remained optimistic about Bitcoin’s value, emphasizing that it was undervalued. The continuous decline in Bitcoin’s price triggered selloffs among new holders, exacerbated by factors such as miner capitulation and whale exchange deposits.
The German government’s distribution of seized BTC, along with Mt. Gox’s creditor repayments and selloffs from various entities, added to the downward pressure on Bitcoin, leading to a five-month low of $53,485 on July 5. This slump had a ripple effect on the broader market, causing losses for altcoins and Bitcoin mining stocks.
In a surprising turn, meme coins rallied while Bitcoin struggled to regain its footing, with coins like BONK, dogwifhat (WIF), PEPE, and BRETT posting gains of over 15% on July 6. Despite the holiday lull in crypto funding activity, Sentient, an AI research organization, secured $85 million in seed funding, signaling continued investor interest in the crypto space.
The German government’s daily Bitcoin transfers since July 1 and the U.S. government’s distribution of a portion of its BTC holdings further impacted the market. Tron founder Justin Sun expressed willingness to purchase the German government’s BTC to mitigate selling pressure, while German legislator Joana Cotar urged the government to halt BTC sales. Mt. Gox’s initiation of repayments on July 4, with transactions involving BTC and Bitcoin Cash, also influenced market dynamics.
In regulatory news, Circle obtained a stablecoin license under MiCA in the EU, marking a milestone for the company as the first stablecoin issuer to secure this authorization. Additionally, the European Banking Authority expanded its guidelines to cover crypto firms under Travel Rules, while a U.S. judge approved Consensys’ motion to expedite legal proceedings against the SEC. Mike Novogratz of Galaxy Digital expressed confidence in the crypto industry’s ability to achieve regulatory clarity irrespective of the presidential election outcome.
